loading up on testosterone
It's amazing what you can learn on the internet. After taking this picture of a squirrel, which I later identified as a male, eating something off the end of a pine branch, I googled pine pollen. There I learned that pine trees have two kinds of cones, male and female. The male cones produce the pollen, which is blown by the wind to fertilize the female cones, which then produce the seeds to make new pine trees. So why would a squirrel eat the pine pollen...because it is loaded with testosterone, and it is mating season after all!
