Garden Tips

I planted the three squash plants out by the back fence where they have lots of room to grow. The seedlings look so vulnerable with their two sets of leaves. We've lost a few over the years to marauding birds, so I try to cover them up for a week or so til they get bigger and settle in. My usual device is a water jug with the bottom cut out--makes a snug little greenhouse and the top's open so it doesnt get too hot during the day. Well, the spindly acorn squash and the sugar pie pumpkin were just too tall for a gallon jug. What are the chances that in a crisis of this kind one's neighbor would have not one, but two, bell jars available? It does get a little steamy in there, so one of the edges is propped up with a wooden block for ventilation. The bell jars seem to be intended for tropical plants, so we'll see how it goes. I think they look terrific. That's a comfrey plant with the purple flowers. Next time you go to look at it, it will be much much bigger. Don't ever plant comfrey unless you mean it.
