ARDEA NOVAEHOLLANDIAE
The white faced heron is self-introduced to NZ and started breeding here in the 1940's ( surprisingly about the same time as I arrived ) Like quite a lot of birds they have a nictitating membrane over their eye when fishing and eating their catch - this protects the eye from damage from the likes of a flayling fish being consumed down the beak. They nest high in trees.
