Snake

S nearly stepped on this snake, basking in the sun at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, near Joliet in northern Illinois. We were hoping to see some of their bison but couldn't find them. The prairie grasses and flowers were only just emerging after this year's prolonged winter.

Does anyone know what it is?
