Clockwork

This is the inside of one of 3 remaining longcase clocks by John Harrison. John Harrison was born in Nostell, the son of the estate carpenter. He famously went on to solve the longitude problem, saving many seafarers.
The movement of this rare early clock is made of wood - oak posted frame construction movement with anchor escapement, wood rod pendulum and count-wheel hour striking on a bell. The wheels are made of oak with segments of oak teeth sectioned into the rim of the wheels.

This clock, built in 1717 can be viewed at Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire.
