Rainbow spiral

The 'Rainbow spiral', the first building in the Netherlands after a design by Hundertwasser.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser does not make his debut in the Netherlands anymore. The artist and architect, born in Vienna in 1928, died seven years ago. But he would undoubtedly have been delighted with his breakthrough in the Netherlands, which is mainly known for its sound and understated architecture. Hundertwasser has not built much, and if you see the striking structure there in this way wriggling in the Limburg green, you can imagine that as an architect he has always remained an outsider.

Hundertwasser was a master in mixing styles. African houses, Byzantine onion shapes on towers, brick facades and Gaudí-like elements were mixed unconcerned, and he also loved reflective material such as silver and gold. As a magpie he picked the most beautiful glimmers from the range of styles and shapes, which he then also poured over with an ecological sauce.

You can view the colorful building from the inside, from the outside and even from the roof, provided you have signed up for a guided tour. The building is in fact used as a Ronald McDonald children's home, so out of respect and privacy of the children and their families a visit without a tour is not possible. The cost of the tour will benefit the Ronald McDonald children's fund.
