CHURCH VIEW

Back again to the oldest building in Filey, the 12th century parish church that can be found on Church Hill, in the north of the town, framed here between the trees and sporting a Golden Fish as a wind vane - you have to look closely !

There are some Norman features in the building such as the chancel arch and you can see some of the older roof lines.
On the opposite bank of Ravine are the remaining old buildings of Filey, centered on Queen Street, where many fishing families once lived.

St Oswald's used to be in the North Riding of Yorkshire and Queen Street in East Yorkshire. When locals speak about 'going over to the North Riding' they are talking about the funeral procession to St Oswald's graveyard.
