Lapwing

or peewit.
I grew up in Ilkley where the beautiful lapwing was a common sight; its distinctive cry and wobbly flight making it a real favourite. However such has been their rate of decline in the UK recently that they are now on the red list (conservation status).

Ever since Chaucer wrote of the 'false lapwynge, ful of treacherye', the lapwing has had an association with deceit, perhaps because of its broken wing distraction display. Whatever, I was delighted to see this large flock in a field near to my house and hope that they increase in number so more people can see this lovely bird.
