Sevilla D17 - Passion

On a day without scheduled activities, I went to catch two exhibits that really held my interest because of the passion both artists had for their craft and the beauty (or perhaps challenges?) of life.

The first was of Robert Capa's photos in color. This may be a bit surprising as Capa is best known as a master of war photojournalism working in b&w (as well as the founder of Magnum). Very few of the documentation on his work (which range from the Spanish civil war through the war in Indochina, where he lost his life) feature his color images. But he started experimenting with color in 1938 though few of his color images made it into newspapers or magazines as it would typically take several weeks for color film to be developed. A cool world in color from a quintessentially b&w photographer :)

The next exhibit won my heart though. It is an immersive journey through the works and life of Van Gogh. No original paintings to study quietly, but rather projections of his works all around the room (floor, screens, walls) documenting the stages of his life through his ultimate suicide. Each stage projected images from that specific era, accompanied by the most beautiful and towards the end, poignant, music (including my all time fav opera duet: Lakme's Flower duet) as well as images of his writing and quotes from him (the main blip features my fav quote).  So rather than studying the technique and beauty of a particular painting hanging on a wall, we were taken through an intimate journey of Van Gogh's state of mind through his life. What an amazing experience! I felt truly connected.

Now it's time to hit the books and do some homework for tomorrow's classes... I can do it, right? ;)
