The Lighted Life

The Juggle

The only chance I had to blip today was a brief walk outside to get lunch. When I saw these round bollards in front of one of the federal buildings, they seemed an appropriate metaphor for my day. It was a day of juggling many balls in the air, trying desperately not to let any one of them hit the ground. It is also a metaphor for the echo effects of events that happen on our Earth.

The hurricane in on the East Coast was a tragic event for all of those that were in its path and the attention and thoughts of us all should remain fully with the families that suffered so dearly in the region. But, the lesser effects of the storm are not just confined to the region.

Since Manhattan is the epicenter of the global markets, the ramifications of the storm are being felt throughout the business and employment communities in every corner of our country. And at a critical time of job formation for our economy, the temporary disruption of the markets and the employment that results therefrom is something that our economy could have done without.

As I said, none of this economic delay should take the focus of our concern off of those that were directly in the storm's path. The economy will return to normal quite soon. Yet, for many of the families in the northeast, life will forever be altered and Sandy will always be an epic tragedy. For the rest of us, this storm was a distant and temporary inconvenience.

Please have a great Friday. Unlike today, I hope to have some time to catch up with you all at some point tomorrow, either between meetings or at the end of the day.
