Sgwarnog: In the Field

Route

Any journey that involves negotiating the pedestrian tunels at Odsal Top is undertaken with a certain degree of trepidation, but the sun was shining and there was a football match on the other side to lure me through.

Route One Rovers (white) usually play their home games a short stroll down the hill from home, but this much postponed game was held at the ground of the away team, Wibsey FC (blue). Bankside Cricket Club is the venue, tucked into a bit of ground between Odsal Stadium and South Bradford Golf Club. This was the last league game for both teams in this season's West Riding County Amateur Football League Premier Division which sits at Level 11 of the football pyramid, and is the same league as the Salts-Steeton game that I saw a couple of weeks ago..

The kick-off had been advertised as 6pm but there was little activity when I arrived so I pottered down a path across the golf course toward Low Moor. There are a few local nature reserves near here that I haven't yet visited so I scoped out a route for a possible future visit. And there was still one Speckled Wood and one Large White at large in the evening sunshine.

Back at the football Route One took an early lead with a fine shot from the corner of the box. They proceeded to create a number of chances but didn't get a second until into the second half.  Wibsey pulled one back toward the end but Rovers saw the game out for deserved win. I liked this picture because you can more or less see everyone's faces, even if the bodies are in different directions.

Then it was back through the tunnels and a couple of buses home.
