The steps lead up to the end of a tunnel, dug through the hilltop in the First World War to allow munitions to be sent from one side of the island to the batteries on the other.
Now, there is a much greater risk of injury from the attacks of the gulls, who have taken over almost the whole of the East end of the island, and most of the West, too.
