Forty-two Percent!

Jo Ann Hardesty has accomplished a miracle! In a field of six candidates, some of whom had the backing of big money, she cobbled together a team of young people, penniless volunteers (like her photographer), homeless people, and old social justice workers--and got over 34,000 votes for a position on Portland City Council. She'll face a run-off in November, against another Black woman candidate who has Establishment backing, and it will be stressful, but I believe she can do it. Very seldom these days does a candidate "of the people" make it, but at the moment she's making it. I am so happy.
