Mary Barbour

While at Govan Bus Station this morning I was attracted by this piece of sculpture. Mary Barbour, a mother-of-two from a tenement flat in Govan, led the Rent Strikes of 1915 which forced the UK government to change the law and defeated unscrupulous slum landlords who’d happily throw women and their kids on the streets while their menfolk were fighting, or lost, at war. Mary’s army was the #MeToo movement of the day, a protest led by women who’d had enough of being treated like second class citizens. Unfortunately I had only my little camera with me and it kept giving me a message saying it couldn't 'defocus'.  No idea what that meant, but most of my shots while out and about today are blurred  -  fortunately Mary's statue turned out reasonable.  The Sculptor was Amdrew Brown - see HERE!
