Bracket Fungi
Bracket fungi which I found on today's pug walk.
This is a likely sign of decay and rot in the tree.
If the rot occurs in a branch, it will weaken and eventually drop, but as this is in the trunk the tree will eventually lose its strength and be prone to falling down in the wind.
Fungi have been called the unsung hero's of recycling as they break things down, and are essential to any woodland ecosystem.
