The town of Carentan is twinned with 2 towns...

Waldfischbach-Burgalben (in Germany) and Selby (North Yorkshire)

This sculpture is a gift to Carentan from the German twin.  A little odd?  Well, not as odd as might be thought.

The joy of the German language is that you can break down the components of numerous words.  In this case, Waldfischbach breaks down as Wald (wood) + Fisch (fish) + Bach (stream).  Burgalben comprises Burg (fortified castle) + Alb (mountainous region).

The sculpture comprises a fish and a tree, and if you look up the town's coat of arms you will find a rather large fish.

I doubt that very few Normans can produce a sound remotely like the German twin's name.  This may be why Carentan decided to twin also with Selby, a word which Normans can pronounce much more easily.

And Selby is (well, was) a coal mining town.  If you look at the sculpture, you will see that most of its "scales" and "leaves" were created out of shovels.

The German twin is strictly speaking a Verbandsgemeinde.  Try breaking down this word!
