Moving into the 3rd dimension
This is one of the pieces from the Points of Vision >>Beyond the 2nd Dimension show, it's called Emulator by Matt Parker. Using the 3D display, a microsoft kinect and some code, the piece displays the virtual reflections of the user.
The display - persistence of vision (POV) - takes ideas from the Zoetrope, like the Zoetrope it is circular but in this version the strip of images has been replaced by a vertical bank of LEDs which an electric motor spins at high speeds, this creates the illusion of 3D. Unlike the Zoetrope, the POV volumetric display can be viewed from different angles and the shapes have width, height and length, like a piece of digital sculpture.
It is fantastic to see the results of this project exhibited, the show has been a great success and sparked lots of interest and questions from visitors.
