A Mystery

Anyone know the tree from which we took this fruit?

A busy day with a bit of shopping and then getting ready to welcome friends from further north. We all went out for an anniversary meal. On the way we passed a tree which was covered in small, white bell shaped flowers but still had the fruit shells on it - size of almonds but segmented inside - anyone know what it is. We're in Spain.
