War horse

So again whilst inside Belfast City Hall yesterday registering my father-in-laws recent death I noticed this new display.

Turns out it was only presented last Monday to our current Lord Mayor of Belfast - Nuala McAllister, who was presented with this bronze horseshoe to commemorate the role thousands of Irish horses played in the First World War.

This symbolic gesture forms part of The War Horse Memorial, the first national monument dedicated exclusively to the millions of UK, Allied and Commonwealth horses, mules and donkeys lost during the Great War. It’s is nicely displayed in a glass display so that meant it was difficult getting a good close up shot of it without reflections of the light. The actual brass horseshoe is bronze with an engraving that reads “”War Horse Memorial 1914 - 1918”
