Fallen

Been a couple of weeks since I've walked round the Gight Woods and since my last visit an old tree had fallen down across the Ythan. I suppose the high winds of a couple of weeks back must have weakened it and finally pushed it over the edge. With the ferns growing on it, it reminded me of a fallen rainforest tree, although the fact that there was still frost on the ground when I was taking the picture kind of spoiled the tropical illusion.

Happy to report that on my walk today, I saw no signs of any ash dieback in the woods - and there are some fine old Ash trees here. It would be a disaster if we lost them. Sadly, the remaining elms hereabouts look like they are finally succumbing to Dutch Elm disease, however, its heartening to still see a couple still alive next to the dead ones. Wonder how many will survive next year ?
