The Tongariro Crossing

We did the Tongariro Crossing today. On the right is Mount Ngauruhoe, which was also Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films, on the left Tongariro which are both volcanos.

It's and alpine crossing and said to be the best one day walk in New Zealand. It's simply amazing, I could post a photo a day for a month. The walk is quite hard, but the views are breathtaking and as you think it can't get any more incredible it does.

The walk down was interesting too. Mount Tongariro hasn't erupted since 1897, then in August this year it did. Although not the kind of eruption you see in disaster movies, it still threw rocks and ash about.

As you walk down you can see it venting steam into the air from the side of the mountain. I reckon on it's current schedule it's not due another one until 2127, we didn't linger to find out.
