Not a lot of people know that
This pillar box stands outside the old town hall in Market Green in the centre of Carlisle. The old town hall now houses the tourist information office as well as several shops and the inevitable Costa Coffee.
The plaque on the front of the pillar box reads as follows:
This replica Victorian pillar box was installed on 15th December 1989 to commemorate the fact that in 1853 Carlisle was the first place in mainland Britain to have a roadside pillar box.
