Sevilla D30: Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is one of the most important days of the year in Sevilla and is celebrated on a Thursday, 60 days after Palm Sunday. The celebration is dedicated to the Eucharist and dates back to the 15th century, when the processional route, still in vigor today, was established.

This evening, on the eve of the celebration, my speaking partner suggested we go check out some of the installations and it was a wonderful outing!

Throughout the week, and in particular on Wednesday afternoon and evening, Sevillanos decorate their balconies and windows, shops mount installations in their windows, and various organizations install altars along the city center's streets. There is such a commitment to that practice that a jury awards prizes to the best installations. Rosemary and aromatic flowers are spread around the installations and on the streets.

Depending on how my fight against my cold goes, I might brave the crowds tomorrow to see the actual procession.
