Old Crocks

This morning, Annie, Pete and myself braved the freezing, pelting rain to nip down to the A23 and watch some of the vintage cars on the London to Brighton run. We had to leave John back at home, popping night nurse pills.

I can't begin to imagine how uncomfortable it must be for the drivers and passengers in these vehicles in this awful weather. We did get some smiling, waving competitors but mainly they looked grumpy as hell.

We stood freezing for about an 1 hour 20 mins.... poor Annie! She seemed to enjoy it, especially as were joined by a rather eccentric, awfully posh old fellow who was on his way to have a game of tennis?!!

Once back home, we bullied persuaded John that he would feel much better after a shower and a breath of fresh air......

An hour later we sped off to Reigate to see John's old house, where he grew up and then headed for Dorking. John's parents, my uncle and aunt are buried in the cemetery there. It was good for Annie to see all these places.... rather moving and it brought back a lot of memories for John and myself.

From here we drove to Denbies Vineyard and had a pot of tea and cakes in the restaurant there, had a quick browse in the shop, listened to a trio of singing ladies (dressed in 1940's style) in the foyer and then headed for Leatherhead.

John went to school at St John's School in Leatherhead, where he has wanted to go back and visit. We arrived at the school, completely ignored the "no entry" signs and parked in the "do not park here" spot. Not a soul about, so we trotted round the grounds with John giving us a running commentary of his days there.... It was highly amusing when he pointed up to a certain window and said
"that is the room in which I was beaten for slacking in Latin lessons". It was no surprise that he couldn't remember what the school motto was, and that when he saw the Latin motto up on the arch of the entrance, he was unable to translate it...

Quae Sursum Sunt Quaerite (Latin for Seek those things which are above)

I'm blipping and cooking again!! There will be tons of spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes and some burnt pans!

As I type this, John is laughing his head off at an episode of Fawlty Towers

Happy Sunday, blippers
