The Hebrides day 5

Day 5

This was our rest day - 40 Miles and only 20 of it into a head wind. The terrain was rolling to flattish, so pretty easy and there was lots to break it up. We left Stornaway heading for Port of Ness and the Butt of Lewis.

We stopped at various mini markets picking up groceries. Then headed to Clach An Truisel the largest standing stone in Britain. Then onto Port of Ness where we had lunch. The weather was quite misty making it colder than we had become used to. After lunch we headed to St Moluag Church which someone in the pub had recommended last night, advising us to ignore the closed sign and to go on in. It had a huge Celtic cross war memorial outside. Quite unusual to see gas lanterns still in use, there was no obvious electricity.

Then on to the Butt of Lewis lighthouse with its stunning cliff top and amazing rock formation. From here we had a tail wind back to the farm which we had already dropped of our panniers at earlier. It’s a lovely hostel with very friendly owners. The evening was spent watching waves break on the rocks. Ah a lovely day off!
