We finally arrived in Hamburg, just 12 hours late. The city has already rewarded persistence - with a large, left-wing demonstration, for or against something or other, with a substantial, but it seems unnecessary, police presence, unless slogans are against the law.

Other sights seen included a smart car opposite a shop with an odd name; some very North European reflections; a whole lotta selfieing (is that a word? it should be); a poignant question (which means "what remains?" I gather); and a visit to Hamburg's most fashionable football club - St Pauli - not for any actual football but to buy a couple of T shirts.

Posh dinner this evening at Hamburg's highest restaurant, atop a wonky-looking building.
