On hire from Crazy Fun Bus
This morning I awoke somewhat groggily to a world veiled in fog. That 'almost at the edge of the world' atmosphere rolled in through the window at me. Then across the street I saw a big yellow something...it turned to be a 'crazy fun bus'. I'm not entirely sure what those are but they sound like a good thing, especially at the end of the world.
After the honourable DavzoBroon's recent Springsteen namecheck, I found myself in the mood for a dose of His Bruceness this morning. So I cranked up iTunes and have ended up spending a surprisingly large chunk of the day tuning into two albums I could listen to on a loop and never get bored of - Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad. Both are decidedly downbeat, suffused with a wistful highway melancholia. The rich lyrics brim with vivid characters and every song is a story, a four minute film that reveals something a little different time you listen to it. Bruce S reminds me of Mark Knopfler in the way he writes about characters and personalities, and also his fascination with what the Americans call 'blue collar' folk - people who work with their hands: factory labourers, fishermen, policemen, illegal immigrants.....
A couple of particularly strong tracks for anyone interested: Youngstown and Nebraska (the title track)....
