Cockchafer with Bokeh
Look who l spotted hiding on the underside of a blackcurrant leaf this afternoon!!! I think it is May Bug but if there are any entomologists out there l would happily be corrected. It is over and inch long (for scale) and is wonderfully hairy!! We will be keeping our lights off or our doors closed this evening as they are rather challenging if they come in to the house!
I was looking them up on google and l found an entry in wikipedia which said they usually arrive in a swarm and can cause major problems in woodland and with crops.. the larvae happily munching potato crops etc and that they were almost exterminated by pesticides. However they are now on the increase again since the EU laws on pesticides changed they are no longer being eradicated. So if we end up with an invasion Wikipedia had a rather intriguing solution..
'In some areas and times, cockchafers were even served as food. A 19th century recipe from France for cockchafer soup reads: "roast one pound of cockchafers without wings and legs in sizzling butter, then cook them in a chicken soup, add some veal liver and serve with chives on a toast".
...anyone??
