Cambridge
Cambridge...the city of spires and bicycles. I swear there are more cyclists in Cambridge than in Amsterdam! And woe betide if you step into the cycle lane when a cyclist is coming along, you may get wiped out! I was complaining to Adam that the cyclists are a bit aggressive and a little bit rude in Cambridge, and he was saying that they are so sick of dozy tourists stepping into the road and cycle paths trying to take just one more photo...he has a point. And Cambridge certainly has more than its fair share of tourists.
I left home early this morning to drive to Cambridge. I had organised a cycle tour of Cambridge and Grantchester for the arts society and we were once again so lucky with the weather, after a cool start it turned into a warm and sunny day. I started the day there with a coffee at one of my favourite cafes, Fitzbillies. Thankfully everyone turned up at the right place at the right time, despite a few people who had delays on trains. We set off at 10.30 am and had a fantastic guide who told us many facts and stories about Cambridge. We cycled along the backs following the river, past all the boat houses where we learnt the history of some of the houses - we went past a few colleges, over the greens, visited the library, and saw the Corpus Clock. We saw many students who had just been sprayed with sparkling wine/cava as is the tradition on the final day of their exams. We stopped for lunch at a charming little pub in Grantchester, the village made famous by Rupert Brooke, and then finally made our way back to Cambridge, finishing at about 4pm.
I then went to a cafe for an iced coffee - Cambridge has such a good selection of coffee places - where I met up with Adam and Jenny. Jenny finished her exams today so they finally can relax. We had an early sushi supper - we were joined by Gavin, who came by train from London, and another very good friend of Adam and Jenny. It was wonderful to see them again and we had a very nice evening with delicious food.
We finally got home at about 11pm and I am now off to bed! Its been a very long, but fabulous day.
