GUY FAWKES

My blip today is of the Guy Fawkes Inn, 25 High Petergate YORK where there is a sign on the window stating that Guy Fawkes was born here in 1570 (13 April I believe) However , the web site of the 'Old Peterite Club' boys who attended the school say he was born around the corner in Stonegate.

And there are conflicting stories as to which school he did attend, on one hand I read that he attended -"St. Peter's" and on the other hand I read that he was educated at "Ye free schole in ye horsefair" which apparently was on the corner of Lord Mayors Walk and Gillygate.

He was also known as Guido Fawkes whilst fighting for the Spanish in their 80 years war.

Now we all know of his involvement in the attempt to assasinate King James by blowing up the House of Lords, but as I have been researching for this info, I find that, just before he was to be hanged on 31st January 1606, he jumped off the scaffold and broke his neck, and thereby saving himself the agony of the mutilation that was to follow as they draw and quarter him.

As we celebrate with a bonfire and fireworks and possibly an efigy of the man himself, St. Peters school I belive do the same but without the Guy, well it stands to reason if he is an 'old boy'

Enjoy your evening and stay safe.
