Long Grass
I spotted these calves in the field on the way to open the coop. The field is similar to the hens plot, only the hens are completely hidden in the long grass and docks! You can see where they go in the plot by the paths made by the downtrodden grass. As I was cleaning the coop I saw Greta making her way down one of the paths, and a little later heard her making clucky egg laying sounds. On investigation I discovered her sitting behind some docks, and when I moved her there were 6 eggs! I think broody Izzy and Henrietta are preventing the other girls from laying in the nesting area! Which shows how bad-tempered a broody hen can be as they are a third of the size of the other hens! I decided to give the eggs to the hens as I wasn't sure how long they had been laying there! They were very happy as they love their own eggs! I then went round the whole perimeter of the fence pulling up the long grass which drains the battery - I'd already walked round the outside flattening the grass on a previous visit!
I then spent 4 hours on my plot! Where does the time go?! I took snacks and water and had a pee behind the raspberries so all good! I staked the peas and put in stakes for the broad beans, planted more beans as some were obviously old packets and had not come up and my lovely bamboo framework would look patchy if I didn't resow it! I then planted my marigolds around the broad beans to deter black fly and my three types of sunflower in amongst some of my squash. I then resowed lettuce as again some rows nothing had come up - old packets again! Then finally I sowed some spinach where the Swiss chard had not come up - new packet so not sure what went on there! Luckily it has self seeded in other beds so there will be plenty for the hens for the rest of the year and into next year! Finally I laid orange halves round my dahlias and newly sown bed to prevent the slugs munching seedlings - they do like to munch on orange!
Inspecting my plot at the end of all this I picked and ate wild strawberries and discovered 2 alliums whose stems had been nibbled by slugs - they will look lovely in vases at home so not too bothered!
You would have thought I'd have taken it easy once home - but I seemed to be on full on mode and after eating did some watering in my back garden, a load of washing and tidied my allotment bag and found pouches for all the necessary bits I take up with me! Finally some yoga and meditation to put me into relax mode for the rest of the day - not that there was much left of it!
