Stockport

This is where I was for a short time this morning. My sister and I attended my mum’s inquest at the South Manchester Coroner’s Court. Conclusion - Evelyn Mayers died on the 15th April 2018 as a result of industrial disease. Not what we expected but finally it’s over.

Outside the court this statue commemorates the life of James Conway from Stockport who joined the Marines in 1942 and became one of the “Cockleshell Heroes”. He canoed hundreds of miles to place limpet mines on the undersides of running cargo ships. In his last letter home he said that he risked his life to make a decent and better world for everyone. At the age of 20 he was captured, interrogated and executed.

A very moving day in more ways than one.
