The Edge of the Wold

Reprieved?

I last blipped the Venus and Cupid sculpture in February 2011. At that time, this work by Shane Johnstone was under threat. The Council voted not to pay the artist to site the work permanently at Scalestone Point just outside Morecambe, and he then said that he would break it up. Since then there has been a campaign to keep it, led by amongst others, the Bare Mayor. There is even a Facebook page dedicated to it.

So 21 months on, Venus is still swinging Cupid, her rather substantial derriere firmly planted on the spot where there was once a WW2 gun emplacement. In this shot, you get an idea of the view of Morecambe and the Bay that they enjoy when they are not feeling too dizzy, and you can see the whale's fluke picked out in blue mosaic tiles on Venus's back. The obligatory solitary gull also makes a lonely appearance.

The piece has an alternative title: "Love, the most beautiful of absolute disasters". I rather like that. The sculptor also dedicated it to all those lost working at sea.

I passed it this morning as the sun was rising, and I passed it again this afternoon as the sun was setting. An expensive day as the Jazz was having her annual service. And she has to go back again soon for more work.

I had been expecting to see some Arnside fireworks tonight, until Simon told me the display had been on Saturday and I had missed it!
