Cafe Central

Vienna is famous for its pastries. So much so that the French for a 'danish pastry' is une viennoiserie .
If you think that the croissant is a pure French invention, you are wrong. It also comes originally from Vienna. It was created as the Turks were at the city gates. The Viennese bakers created a new pastry bearing the form of the Islamic crescent, hoping that honoring the invaders might save the city. It worked!
Since many French queens were Austrian, this is how the pastry was brought to France.
Cafe Central is an old Viennese institution. The portraits show Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Sissi, who commissioned this local cafe.
