Kendal Library
Interested to notice that Kendal Library is called the Carnegie Library. Surely not the famous American Carnegie? Yes the same. Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline in 1835 and emigrated with his parents when he was 13.The plaque outside the library reads:-
"Scottish American millionaire, became a telegraph boy in Pittsburgh at 14 and subsequently , by investment in sleeping cars, oil and the US steel industry, amassed a vast fortune. From 1901 he owned a castle in Sutherland and devoted his wealth to peace studies, education, endowments to universities and libraries. Kendal Library was funded by Carnegie and opened in 1909." There is a list on Wikipedia , incomplete, that lists the huge number of libraries in the UK funded by Carnegie.
