Family medicine day

This is a conference we held last Monday. Its purpose was to inform GPs about what family medicine is. There isn't a culture of family practice here. Docs become GPs here after finishing medical school. From there they do return of service work for as long as they. Are required to, usually a few years, but it isn't a career. Then they apply to specialty residencies. So there isn't a group of committed practitioners to provide long term primary care. This is what we are hoping to change, by helping develop a family medicine residency as part of a partnership between U of T and Addis Ababa University. We each gave one or two talks at this conference, some on more traditional topics.

The work has been interesting, challenging and frustrating. Much more groundwork to do than we thought. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
