Scattery Island - Co. Clare
A lovely boat journey over to the island...Scattery is situated in the Shannon estuary and the last inhabitants left in 1978.
St.Senan (B.488-D560) built a monastery there and there are many monks buried as well as island people. Senan barred women from the island..he wouldn't get away with that today !
Main picture shows the boat pier and one of the houses now a tourist information centre.
The Vikings raided in 815, killing the monks and settling there themselves, which in turn led to attacks by Irish kings.
The inhabitants of Scattery appear to have escaped the deaths and emigration during the Famine...in 1881 there were 141 people living there and these dwindled down to the last two in 1978.
extra 1: Round Tower, and your eyes aren't deceiving you, it was struck by lightening and the result was a little bulging..
