A walk with R and S part 2...
When you finish reading this, I know you’ll be all shaking your heads in disbelief, especially after my last sentence yesterday....
S had told me some days ago that in these days we should go to Florence to see a natural phenomenon in the cathedral. Apparently, near the summer solstice, the sunlight enters through a special hole in the dome and hits the ground in the left transept where there is a special sundial. The sunbeam will light a picture of the sun on the 21st of June, but the phenomenon is visible also some days before and some days after that date. The left transept is usually closed to visitors, but, according to S, it would have been open these days.... (I know what you’re thinking..... and you’re absolutely right).
After queueing for about an hour under the scorching sun and occasionally in the shade too, we finally entered. We thought the hundreds of people queuing to go in were there for the same reason as ours and we were a bit concerned we would not see well. Once inside, we approached the transept and we found it closed. So, we went back to the welcome desk and asked whether there was a special access to the transept. The man stared at us and asked: “a special access for what?”. Needless to say, R and I looked at each other in disbelief. AGAIN???
To cut a long story short, the phenomenon is only visible on certain days, as the hole in the dome is usually closed and they have to open it. Apparently, this week you can see it tomorrow and on Thursday. Unluckily, both days are not good for me....
What have I learnt today? Never trust S to organise an outing in Florence.
