Life and death

The last time I was here, in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, this massive tree was still standing, with a notice explaining that there was still life in it, but not enough (or something to that effect). Today something different: most of the tree has been felled and the bits arranged around the remainder to attract wildlife in many forms. The remaining trunk is now sprouting vigorously from top and bottom; who knows what the end result will be.

(Funny: I don’t feel inclined to put a question mark after that apparent rhetorical question; I think I’m regarding “who knows” as a word on its own ..)

Back to the tree: I rather liked its statuesque ruination against the blue sky.
