It's hip to be square

Many years ago I saw the film "All Night Long" featuring among other jazz musicians, Dave Brubeck. I have the LP of the soundtrack. If my memory serves me well, the film was a great black and white movie. The jazz even greater. I am sure this was the first time I had heard the term "square" being used to describe someone. Hence my mono blip - is it hip to be square?
