Chartwell
After what seems to be weeks of either grey skies or endless rain today has been one of those splendid November days with sparkling sunshine. As I was due to meet some friends for lunch at Chartwell I decided to arrive ahead of schedule and have a brief walk round the glorious grounds.
The gardeners are understandably proud of the gardens and I found one who was quite happy to talk to me and explain about the wigwams in the foreground. The ponds are surrounded by huge gunnera which, in this area, are susceptible to frost damage so they cut the leaves in autumn and arrange them over the plants. Come the spring - beautiful new growth.
This special place was the home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1924 until his death in 1965. He is reputed to have said that a day away from Chartwell is a day wasted. I can understand that.
