SPURWINGED PLOVER ( Vanellus Miles)
Also known as the Masked Lapwing in Australia from where it was self introduced. The first pair apparently bred in Invercargill in about 1932. (Paul Gibson BIRDS New Zealand) A careful look at the wing and one can see the yellow spur. They are a raucous bird and not frightened to mix it up on the wing with Hawks and Magpies ( themselves hardened combatants )
This is an old bird, evident from its grey old legs. They are most often seen in pairs but I think this one has seen its hayday ?
