30 Days Wild Day 26 - Lesser Stitchwork
Very busy, with things in and around the garden. According to the sensor in the shade under the bird table on the north side of the house most of the day was above 25°C.
As things cooled down in the evening Clickychick wanted needed to do her jog/walk exercise. So we headed for Greystoke Gill a nice quiet road and more importantly shaded for much of its length by trees.
I had another look along the verges for a wild blip. There shining out among the grasses was this little white flower. A Stitchwort which I have decided is the Lesser (Stellaria graminea). The flower believe it or not is made up of 5 petals. Some of you are busy counting and thinking he is wrong! When examined very carefully it can be seen that what looks like a pair of petals is actually a deeply divided single petal.
Each flower is only open for three days with the plant producing a succession of flowers so that the flowering looks much longer. A common hedgerow plant which is happy in most conditions.
