Gnarly Oak
There is a wildfire burning in Lake County northeast of us.The fact that they are managing to bring it slowly under control is a testament to the heightened awareness of the facts of climate change and increased fire danger in California this year. Everyone is on edge as the temperatures climb and the wind comes up in the afternoons. The fact that it is still only June is sobering, as is that fact that the Fourth of July is quickly approaching and with it the inevitable use of fireworks and even barbecues in tinder dry conditions.
I think of this oak tree as a sort of sentry at the top of our field. I love it's shape and the view up the canyon toward Hood Mountain behind it, whose burned slopes are clearly visible from Highway 12 below us but not from here. I've taken many pictures of it over the years and am including several links to past pictures for my own reference. I am incredibly grateful for the continuity of these shots and the fact that I am able to continue taking pictures of it from time to time.
