St Mary's Abbey ruins York

The ruins of what was once the richest monastery in the north of England, St Mary's Benedictine Abbey, are close to York Minster in the Yorkshire Museum Gardens.

The ruins are of the church completed in 1294, but monks had been on the site since the end of the eleventh century.

J.M.W.Turner sketched the ruins on one of his Yorkshire tours in 1797.
