Not an otter
In the morning we went to our favourite place in the world. Sitting quietly, eating home-grown strawberries, we suddenly heard a mighty splash, and this common sandpiper started calling in a panic.
More splashes, and we realised that we were being visited by an otter. No photos, but we caught several glimpses.
The first time I've seen an otter in freshwater, I think; they've all been in the sea before.
At Loch Garten, the ospreys have not had a great season (inexperienced male), so we left quickly and headed to Cairngorm. Ridiculously hot! Half way up the mountain the temperature was over 30 degrees.
A glorious day, all-in-all.
The extra is a strange fungus on a scots pine root, which I hope Pennybun might be able to ID
