The unseasonably low temperatures and rain were not enough to dampen the the fire and passion at today's Bellingham gathering to protest the inhumane and despicable separation of children from their parents at this nation's border crossings.
This took place outside city hall. On the corner of the street is the Healing and Reconciliation Arch (see extra), a reminder of other shameful incidents in our past -- local and national.
In 1885, Chinese residents were driven out of Whatcom County by mobs.
In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to forcibly move all people of Japanese descent, including US-born citizens, to concentration camps. When they were eventually released and returned to their former homes, many of them were unable to reclaim their property.
How many more times will we allow such things to happen? The answer to that question is blowing in the wind.
