Mungo...back blip
After a delayed departure for our journey we arrived to find the roads to our rendezvous at Mungo closed due to wet weather. It’s a semi arid region so they rarely get rain and the unsealed roads don’t cope with traffic. Anyway we kept on and finally went into the National Park from the West via Mildura, a few hundred kilometres out of the way.
We did arrive to a great welcome. Our relatives were the only people at the resort and after unpacking we went up to the Lodge to a roaring fire and restaurant. Very hospitable. We only saw one other vehicle on the road (120k).
Next day 29th June we rode our bikes 4 k to the information centre, a modern building with great display. To put it in a paragraph....this region used to have a series of lakes which dried up about 18,000 years ago. Sand and clay deposits covered remains of the ancient Aboriginal civilisation which have now eroded giving a great history of life of the people who loved here. Carbon dating shows the remains are 40,000+ years old and the civilisation was quite sophisticated having trade and burial rites. The male skeleton of a 50 year old showed he was 6’9” tall which meant the food supply was probably very good. After the information centre we did a heritage ride on the bikes out to some old homesteads and shearing sheds....approx 15.
Now there are beautiful eroded sand dunes. We went on an evening tour which allowed access to the Lunettes. It’s hard to take photos on a tour but I tried and took about 300-400. I chose this one as it shows the nice light on the dunes.
Extras show full moon and the group on tour...
