Eastern Wood-pewee
The eastern wood-pewee is one of the easiest birds to learn to recognize by its call - which is loud and says something like "pee-a-wee." But it's typically been one of the hardest for me to see because although it calls its name loudly from the woods near our house, or along the road where we walk, it doesn't sit right out on the porch railing like our phoebe - another flycatcher that calls out its name - does. When you do see one sitting out in the open it's either way at the top of a tree, or moving around so fast you can't get a bead on it. Plus - the pewee and the phoebe (and a bunch of other flycatchers) look very similar which means if you see it but it doesn't say anything it's hard to really be sure.
In any case - this is an eastern wood-pewee, and for some reason this spring and summer I've had very good looks at them. There's one living at our house this year who likes to sit up at the top of a dead part of a tree and sing his heart out at dusk. But this one here was seen on our walk this morning - he's not my own personal pewee.
