Building Walls
As I was leaving the OccupyICEPDX encampment this morning after offering a meditation session, a huge truck delivered heavy steel barricades, seven feet tall, to the Homeland Security Police at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Building where we have been protesting since June 17. Workers spent the rest of the day erecting a wall of these barricades all around the building. I guess the protesters' encampment must be somehow threatening. That's encouraging.
Also this news from Louisville, Kentucky:
Early this morning, a team of 40 community members pitched tents and canopies on the grass and erected a barricade at the entrance and exit gates of 654 S. 7th St., the home of the local ICE facility here in Louisville. In solidarity with #OccupyICE in Portland, Tacoma, New York City, Charlotte, San Diego and cities across the country and along the border, community members assembled with the intent to camp out and shut down the facility--Dan Hong.
And from Charlotte, North Carolina:
People are gathering outside iCE in Charlotte again today. 10 people spent the night and will continue to stay there.--Kim Porter.
The movement to Abolish ICE is growing. So is the militarized response to it. The encampment in Louisville has already been wiped out, but the last we heard, the one in Charlotte is still standing. So is the one in Portland.
